Ceiliúradh agus Fáithe

20070716_0018.jpgIrish language publications, Foilseacháin Ábhair Spioradálta (FAS) have just published two books – Fáithe an Fichiú hAois by Séamus Ware and Ceiliúradh edited by Éilís Ni Thiarnaigh. Fáithe tells the story of modern-day prophets, such as Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Dorothy Day. Ceiliúradh celebrates 50 years of publishing books on the faith and features nature photographs, some from Ciary Quirke SJ, with brief extracts from the Bible.

Teaching English to refugees

Clongowes2007 Fourteen Clongowes Transition Year students and two teachers plan to use Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) to assist local asylum seekers and refugees. They are a pilot group who completed an intensive 20 hour course last week and will work closely with the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) to provide language tuition. They are following the example of the successful Belvedere College TEFL programme that has been in operation for a number of years. Links: www.clongowes.com

Sentence adjourned

PapersIrish newspapers today carried reports of an Englishman, a former clerical employee of the Jesuits, who was charged with setting fire to the Irish headquarters on Good Friday last. He pleaded guilty to arson at Eglington Road, Donnybrook, on April 6, 2007, and was due to be sentenced yesterday. The judge however, adjourned his sentence until February 2008.

Jesuit Volunteers Philippines have agreed to accept two Irish applicants, at the request of JVI Ireland, to join their 29th batch of volunteers. Each year about 20 volunteers take part in the 11 month programme. As well as work assignments, the group will spend time training and reflecting together. Past volunteers speak highly of the experience.

Irish academic fellowships

The Irish Jesuits are offering two academic fellowships at Milltown Institute in Theology, including Spirituality, and Philosophy. The fellowships offer full board and accommodation for one or two semesters, a stipend, office and computer facilities. Ignatian preparation

The end of January is the closing date for Magis 08 applications. This is the Ignatian pre-programme to World Youth Day, which takes place in Sydney, Australia next July. Organised by various Ignatian congregations, it includes projects in Cambodia, Indonesia and India among others. Patricia O’Connor of Slí Eile is the Irish coordinator and will lead the Magis group to Sydney.

Roads to Rome

John Dardis and Jim CokeryThe Irish Provincial, John Dardis SJ, and Jim Corkery SJ will travel to Rome in January to take part in the 35th Jesuit General Congregation (GC35) . This is the ruling body for deciding issues around Jesuit mission and identity. This Congregation will address, among other issues, the retirement of Fr Peter-Hans Kolvenbach, General since 1983 and now 78 years of age. Prayer cards have been made available by the Curia. Further role for Finbarr

FCFinbarr Clancy SJ took up the role of acting president of Milltown Institute yesterday for an interim period until June 2008. Finbarr was previously appointed Rector of the Ecclesiastical faculty of the Institute in January of this year. Milltown grants civil and pontifical degrees, including doctorates, in Philosophy, Theology, Spirituality, Sacred Scripture and Pastoral Studies. Links: www.milltown-institute.ie
